University, Sudanese Embassy Strenghten Educational Ties

The University of Abuja and the Embassy of Sudan in Nigeria have pledged to strengthen bilateral relations through educational exchanges and scholarship opportunities for students and staff.

During a courtesy visit to the acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patricia Manko Lar, at the Main Campus on Thursday 24 April 2025, the Sudanese ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Ahmed Omer Taboul, said his visit was aimed at facilitating staff and student exchanges between the University and leading Sudanese universities.

Pointing to the existing agreements between the two countries on educational cooperation, Mr Ahmed said the Sudanese Embassy had also visited the minister of education to explore scholarship opportunities for Sudanese students.

"We have some agreements that were signed, and that is why we are here — to discuss issues of hosting and exchanging staff, professors, and students between universities," Taboul said, adding that, “We also hope to sign new memoranda of understanding with institutions such as Khartoum University, the University of Gezira, and others in Sudan."

The ambassador explained that the ongoing conflict in Sudan had caused widespread disruption to the education system, making collaboration with Nigerian universities necessary for Sudanese students' academic continuity.

The acting vice-chancellor who expressed the willingness of the University management to work with universities in Sudan, said both countries had a lot to learn from each other.

Lar said the University was well positioned to host the Sudanese students given its robust human resources, infrastructure, and collaborations with embassies and institutions across the globe.

"We welcome the Sudanese students, particularly the postgraduate students into our various programmes. We have great scholars in our University, and our faculties have robust relationships and institutions all over the world, and this has helped to strengthen us."

She also pledged the University's commitment to providing a stable and supportive environment for Sudanese students to achieve their academic goals.
