Professor Abdulkadir Baba Hassan's innovative submission, Intelligent Wheel Safety System: AI-Enhanced Tire Safety and Sustainability with Wheel Airbag Technology (IWSS), has been ranked second among the 'Top Ten Most Popular Entries' in the Create the Future Design contest, according to a recent update on the competition's website.
Hassan, a professor of automobile engineering, and director of the Academic Planning Unit of the University of Abuja, is the only African in the top ten list scoring a total of 235 votes in the worldwide contest. Create the Future Design Contest was launched in 2002 by the publishers of Tech Brief magazine, and sponsored by United States of America based groups to recognise and reward engineering innovations. The annual event attracted no fewer than 422 product design ideas from engineers, entrepreneurs, and students across the globe in different categories for the 2024 contest.
Hassan’s groundbreaking innovation in the Automotive/ Transportation category is poised to revolutionize road safety in Nigeria, offering a comprehensive solution to mitigate the risks associated with tire-related accidents and improve overall driving safety. Hassan, who expressed joy over his position in the competition, said, "In essence, the IWSS not only addresses immediate safety concerns on Nigerian roads but also contributes to the broader goals of sustainable development and economic prosperity by reducing the incidence of accidents, minimising environmental impact, and fostering innovation in the automotive sector, the IWSS paves the way for a safer and more resilient transportation infrastructure in Nigeria and sets a precedent for safety advancements worldwide."
